The Lightning Protection Institute (“LPI”) will soon embark on the third-annual Double Check, a national initiative to remind property owners and the design/build communities to

✓ Have a lightning protection system. ✓ Have the system inspected.

Double Check takes place August 23 – 27 this year.

The Lightning Protection Institute Inspection Program (LPI-IP) began in 2011 with a small group of industry professionals and their desire for an alternative inspection and certification resource. They saw an opportunity to create program-wide efficiencies from initial inquiry to the inspected and certified project.

Michigan Lightning Protection, Inc. was the first contractor to experience the LPI Inspection Program advantage, applying for a Master Installation Certificate in February 2011 for its work on the Grand Valley State University Living Center in Allendale, Michigan. …

Changes made to a lightning protection system after it has been inspected and certified can void LPI-Inspection Program certification. Address this by applying for an authorized Master Installation Certificate Revision addendum.

Submit up to three minimal revisions per system within 90 days of the original certificate issuance by completing this application and submitting it to info@lpi-ip.com….

Double Check will take place the last week of August each year. This year, August 24 – 28, the LPI and its members will focus national attention on the criticality of lightning protection systems as essential electronic infrastructure and centuries old life safety application….

As COVID-19 reshapes how we live and work, the LPI-IP recognizes its important role in providing you with inspection and certification solutions during this critical time.

While all in-person meetings are suspended at the Libertyville, IL office, the LPI-IP staff is available to assist you online and by phone between 8 AM – 5 PM EST….

The LPI-IP office will be closed December 24 – 25 and December 31 – January 1.

Gregg Jaroch brings 40 years experience as a consulting engineer to his work as Program Engineer for the LPI-IP. Since 2011, Greg provides third-party review of as-built documentation, submitted by installing contractors. He confirms that each lightning protection system is in compliance with national standards and applicable codes.

What’s one way the LPI-IP has stepped forward to the benefit of its contractors this year?…

The LPI-IP application portal continues to evolve. Programming is now complete to allow for easier input of multi-building jobs. An improved dashboard allows you to submit and view all applications and supporting documentation more efficiently.
